PMDG Forum Rules

1) SIGN YOUR POSTS. Since 1997, we have asked users to sign their real name, first and last, to all posts in the PMDG forum. We do this in order to keep conversations personal and familiar. You took the time to be here, we want to get to know you. This is one of the few rigid rules that we enforce regularly. We do so because we feel that forums in which users must engage one another personally are generally warmer, more collegial and friendly. Posts that are unsigned will be quietly removed without comment by the moderators, so to make your life easy- we recommend enabling your forum signature so that you never need to remember. Do this by clicking the username pull-down at the top right, then selecting "User Settings." You will find the signature editor on the ACCOUNT tab, about half way down the page. Look for "Edit Post Signature." Be sure to click the "Show Signatures" box.

2) BE NICE. We are all simmers here and no matter our differences of opinion, we share a common love of aviation, computing and simulation. Treat everyone else in the forum with respect even when you disagree. If someone frustrates you, walk away from the conversation or ask for a moderator to get involved. Speaking of Moderators, they prefer not to be treated as "The Thought Police" but if any behavior infringes on the enjoyment of another user or is otherwise considered to be unacceptable in the moderator's judgment, it will be addressed in keeping with our view of ensuring that this forum remains a healthy environment for all simmers.

3) BE LAWFUL: Any behavior that infringes upon the law, such as discussion or solicitation of piracy, threats, intimidation or abuse will be handled unsympathetically by the moderators. Threats and intimidation may, at the moderator's discretion, be provided to law enforcement for handling.

4) BE FACTUAL: When you post, always be factual. Moderators will remove posts that are determined not to be factually accurate.

5) RESPECT COPYRIGHTS: Posting of copyrighted material such as flight manuals owned by Boeing or various airlines is not allowed in this forum. If you have questions related to copyrighted material, please contact a forum moderator for clarification.

6) RESPECT PMDG: We love to hear what you like about our products. We also like to hear what you think can be improved, or what isn't working. Please do tell us and we will always treat your feedback with value. Just be sure to treat the team respectfully, as they do put a significant amount of effort into building and maintaining these great simulation products for you.

7) RESPECT PMDG DEVELOPERS: All of the developers will spend some time here. Given the ratio of developers-to-users, it simply isn't possible for us to answer every post and private message individually. Please know that we do try to read everything, but developer workload is simply too high to manage personal contact with tens-of-thousands of users simultaneously. In most cases, members of the development team will stick to conversations in the forum and will not answer private messages.

8) RESPECT OTHER DEVELOPERS: PMDG has always advocated for a strong development community and we have many friends within this community. Every developer offers something unique that helps to make the simming community larger and more vibrant. We insist that you treat our friends respectfully.

9) RESPECT MODERATORS: Moderators have a tough job, and none of them enjoy having to stomp out negativity. If a moderator has to weigh in to keep a thread peaceful, please respect that effort and refrain from giving the moderator any grief.

10) If you require official support for any of our products please open a support ticket through the support portal, https://support.precisionmanuals.com

11) This forum is designed primarily as a vehicle for the PMDG development team to interact with our customers, and for customers to interact with one another in a manner that is positive, supportive and assists in the general advancement of understanding the simulation and helping to make this and future simulations better. Any other use of this forum is not permitted, including but not limited to discussion of pricing policies, business practices, forum moderating policies, advertising of non-PMDG products, promotion of events, services or products that are not approved in advance by PMDG or any other topic deemed unacceptable by any forum administrator

12) HAVE FUN: This is the whole point of it all.

    Is dead?

On 14th June, PMDG will stop selling the J41 as it's an FSX only product (it's not supported in FSX:SE or later). The plans to finish the port to P3Dx64 haven't been officially cancelled, but given the drive towards MFS with P3D's dwindling market share ii seems unlikely resources would be given to complete it especially with problems encountered around the FMS and engines years ago that I'm unaware were ever overcome. In my mind, that makes it dead 😭 but it would be polite if PMDG could officially confirm the status of the J41 port(s), so folks aren't waiting in vain.

As a further question, is it likely PMDG would port the JS41 to MFS as they have done with the DC-6? I have a feeling the work involved might be too much given everything else PMDG has committed to will probably take years? It would seem to be a good fit for MFS with big windows and a typical cruise of FL160 allowing for sightseeing, and Asobo have started fixing the turboprop modelling.

I bought the plane for FSX few weeks back but OC2 doesn't even give me the liveries (OC2 is not updated for it - I have given up hope on that). I have to say the VC looks awesome!!!! I hope my activation doesn't go bad after few years (for example - activation servers are out etc). It is not like I love FSX, I just wanted to experience this plane, and now I can (while still available)

Dead or not I’m not sure. It was a great plane probably one of my favourites I’ve ever had the pleasure to Sim with. The fact that it’s pretty much gone irl now doesn’t really bode well for any future as it’s not exactly an iconic classic like the DC6.

I will say that MSFS seems like the perfect platform for this product. Low (ish) and slow (ish) over that stunning scenery into small airports that look much better than they ever did before. I’m not a mfs simmer yet due to not living in a location with internet capable to support it, but when I am I know the J41 will be up the top of my wish list. (Hopefully with the UNS fmc)

RSR doesn‘t stop mentioning her here and there either. I don‘t think it‘s dead, it just doesn‘t have any priority. They might work on it as an interim release when things become a bit calmer.

Having spent over 500 hours in the X-Plane Saab 340 I know there is something unique about those medium turboprops, the 1990 style instruments are a topic in itself and performance wise it fills a special niche.
Performance wise it was actually a really fun challenge due to the fact the aircraft didn’t have a lot of performance. Add heat or icing and there was quite a lot to consider. I believe service ceiling was FL240 or 250, but on a hot summers day, you weren’t going to get close. FL150-180 seemed to be where it was happiest.

Right where the ice hung out… so many time… ‘bing’, and the climb performance just went…

I don't think anyone in the P3d addon world will hold back any more surprises ...which in this case is really a shame, because there have been more very good quality airliners in P3d as never before in one sim, but nothing at all between 10 and 50 seats!! The closest good quality thing above is the Q400, which is simply not usable at many smaller airports. And anything below the JS41 range are GA or Corporate jets. That's something that is really missing in P3d. I had hoped so much that PMDG would fill that gap, even without FMC, but with GTN integration for example..

I like Milviz‘ Kingair 350 for that job. It‘s fairly fast and has a good range. And it can land in I think around 3000 feet, don‘t know the exact legal number. Also the Flysimware Learjet 35A is a great addon. Both aircraft will need some time to set your stuff up to it. The Kingair even has Navigraph Charts support.

Yeah, I have FSW's Learjet 35A and it's great! But, as with the Kingair 350, it is GA or Corporate. Sure it can be flown well and fast, but it's a different kind of flying than a commercial airliner, even a smaller turboprop.
Granted that any Carenado rendition doesn't even have to be mentioned in detail for that job, even if they "did" nearly all planes of that category^^

In terms of waiting for Godot (PMDG), things sometimes do materialize years later... For example, the BBJ was promised and it took many years for it to finally appear during the lull between the sunset of the P3D era and the rise of the MSFS era in late 2020. Given this pattern, I now expect that the paintkit for the BBJ will take as many years. The PMDG moves in mysterious ways. Maybe Microsoft will get a new CEO or something similar and throw the whole flightsim project out the window. PMDG might then have the downtime to retool for P3Dv10 (or whatever) and we'll see the J41 and BBJ paintkit then.

PMDG is craft and not industry, so we wait and we see.

It got a mention! It's actually been mentioned, in an official capacity at https://forum.pmdg.com/forum/main-fo...d-msfs-dc-6-73
Updates for... J-41 on P3D Platform:
...We have a number of items planned and on the agenda such as ... a platforming update for J-41 ... but we are not actively moving on any of those items and due to the workload currently being experienced by the team there is no new information or timeline to give you.
I'm not sure what "platforming update" actually means, I'm guessing it's not a port to 64 bit but some kind of update to make it interface with the Operations Centre better?

Well aside from the comments from people in the know like RSR and Matthias Kok (I'm paraphrasing but the former said the DC-6 on MFS had already outsold it on all other platforms, and the latter said the MFS CRJ was one of their best ever selling releases for flight simulation), Navigraphs Community Survey for 2020 (2021 results aren't published yet) said 33% of all respondents had switched to MFS as their primary simulator in the last 12 months:

elmucki The Navigraph 2021 survey results are in and the recipients have moved away from P3D and to MFS further. Sometimes or more often use of P3Dv4+v5 is probably 30% vs 65% for MFS:
                                    kzatLo.png
I think that probably puts paid to the J41 in P3Dx64 unless it only needs minimal work to port it. Much as I would like to see it in MFS I don't see it happening as I think it would require a lot of recoding as well as visual work.

Tell you what, if they port J41 to MSFS, that will (finally) give me a reason to upgrade. Right now, I'm still flying the QoS, which is NOT available on MSFS, so I'm happy in FSX land right now. But sad at the same time because my beloved J41 CTDs on landing in FSX:SE. I know, it's not supported. But I sure do miss her. My favorite plane of all time. And I have a bunch. She has grumpy engines, an incredible flight dynamics engine, unique cockpit, icing effects (why are these not in EVERY PMDG airframe?) and just feels more like an airplane than any other add-on. And she's frame-rate friendly now that I have a modern rig. Nothing comes close to the J41. Nothing. In my opinion, the J41 is PMDG's crowning achievement. If the gods be merciful and wake Randazzo up one night to say, "Here, this line of code right here. Tweak it thusly to make it work in SE," I would gladly pay for a cross-grade.

For now, she sits quietly in the hangar, a tarp bundled over her cowls, a forlorn pool of oil growing beneath her stilled props. Her paint is fading and she looks at me, asking: "When?" All I can do is slide the door shut, walk across the tarmac where lesser souls await and tell her, even if I know it may be a lie: "Some day, my love. Some day."

I wholeheartly share your sentiments. It‘s really sad, I found her really late, only flew her a couple of times before I went to P3D and 64bit. I hope that MSFS will offer PMDG a new and more efficient way to implement the engine and nav computers in the future. It‘s the perfect sim for this plane so I really hope that Robert decides to give it another go. It sounds mean but I‘m quite bored of all the Boeings and Airbuses, the DC6 gave me a whole new pleasure to sim-fly. The Jetstream would make it complete.

I get that also although, as I work from home and use a two PC setup with a KVM, most of my flying is done in the background while I work. With the current issue on using a KVM in MSFS, I've not flown the DC-6 half as much as I'd like to (did do a Transatlantic hop on Sunday while watching the SB however - interesting....!).

The Jetstream however would allow me to do those short hops when taking breaks/evenings rather than the weekend flying I'm kinda limited to with the DC-6. Fingers crossed it makes the jump in the not too distant future although I accept that the financial rewards from it would potentially be less attractive than the jetliner fleet.

I keep FSX installed just so I can fly the J41 (and MD-11) occasionally. The J41 would be perfect for MSFS.

                                            hi guys

has the JS41 been mentioned recently? Should I hold out hope? I am getting back into the sim, and after scoring Honeycomb A+B combo for an absurdly good price, I'd like to try my luck at the JS41. I've had a bit of a look at it way back when and I think I'd enjoy it nowadays.

Not been mentioned. But as long as there are beta testers with a Js41 tag there is at least a beta forum for it, so there is some hope.

My fav turboprop simulation ever. Bought it when I had a "new" PC back in 2010 and I could, for the first time ever back then, run FSX without any issues. Oh man, I couldn't stop flying it. What an awesome simulation! I sincerely hope PMDG will not abandon this masterpiece but bring it to MSFS at some point. Will be a release day purchase, that's for sure.

Zsolt- She really was superb, and would be even better in this Sim. She was beginning to blossom in P3D…

Anything that flies in the teens or lower (DC-6 at sub 10k) truly allows for an incredible experience in MSFS.

                                              I miss her too… fingers x’ed!
