PMDG Forum Rules

1) SIGN YOUR POSTS. Since 1997, we have asked users to sign their real name, first and last, to all posts in the PMDG forum. We do this in order to keep conversations personal and familiar. You took the time to be here, we want to get to know you. This is one of the few rigid rules that we enforce regularly. We do so because we feel that forums in which users must engage one another personally are generally warmer, more collegial and friendly. Posts that are unsigned will be quietly removed without comment by the moderators, so to make your life easy- we recommend enabling your forum signature so that you never need to remember. Do this by clicking the username pull-down at the top right, then selecting "User Settings." You will find the signature editor on the ACCOUNT tab, about half way down the page. Look for "Edit Post Signature." Be sure to click the "Show Signatures" box.

2) BE NICE. We are all simmers here and no matter our differences of opinion, we share a common love of aviation, computing and simulation. Treat everyone else in the forum with respect even when you disagree. If someone frustrates you, walk away from the conversation or ask for a moderator to get involved. Speaking of Moderators, they prefer not to be treated as "The Thought Police" but if any behavior infringes on the enjoyment of another user or is otherwise considered to be unacceptable in the moderator's judgment, it will be addressed in keeping with our view of ensuring that this forum remains a healthy environment for all simmers.

Given the ratio of developers-to-users, it simply isn't possible for us to answer every post and private message individually. Please know that we do try to read everything, but developer workload is simply too high to manage personal contact with tens-of-thousands of users simultaneously. In most cases, members of the development team will stick to conversations in the forum and will not answer private messages.

approaches with Gyropilot apparently broken after today's AAU1

    Cheers everyone,

while I haven't had any real issues with the Gyro pilot until today, AAU1 which has just been officially released seems to have broken it here now too for radio approaches. I tried several ILS and LOC approaches into different airports and non of them were captured by the Localizer or Approach modes anymore.

Following the GPS course was perfect though, no more banking at all, I didn't try to fly towards a VOR this time with the Localizer mode.

    Anyone able to confirm?

    Hi Marc,

was the update released via the in-game updater or via the store etc. ?
I just tested VOR navigation and ILS approaches before the update and both of them were captured flawlessly.

Let's see how it works with the update...

I did another test flight: same approach, same behavior - still no issues...

Can you confirm it's sim version 1.30.9.0 after the update?

          .
i have never had much luck with getting the ILS to capture properly but i'm wondering if it is just user error.
i tried dan's method of only switching the loc on when the needle was centered and then switching to approach when the glideslope is centered.
at this point does one turn off the altitude hold (and the approach mode supplies vertical control?) or does the altitude hold need to stay on to control the vertical?
maybe i'm not turning it off soon enough or something.. hmm.

I don‘t know if I‘m wrong, but it should capture the glideslope although ALT HOLD is on. On my test flight yesterday I accidentially had ALT HOLD on. It doesn‘t seem to be a problem…

I tried several methods now. Before this recent update it worked on my side and now I can't get the ILS to be captured anymore whatever I do.

I guess that would mean to leave the Beta? No idea, i won't do that, too much trouble every time. AAU1 will be released officially soon and everyone will have it anyway.

Not long after AAU is released PMDG will have an updated DC-6 for us to play with.

                              Hmmm...

Maybe I did something wrong, but for me the ILS approach failed today. I could still fly it down by hand and receive guidance for Localizer and G/S via the OBS gauge, but the autopilot just flew straight past the interception point. I had it on Approach mode, VLOC set, Alt hold on, and everything was reading just what I would have previously expected when it worked flawlessly.

The kicker is: I am not in the beta.

I, too, experienced this last night. The link between the ILS and control surfaces appears dysfunctional. Also, when taking off and activating the autopilot, the plane banks to the right and the directional control knob on the central pedestal is very sluggish. I have altered the systems and ai.cfg files as per other posts and this has solved the issue of the plane not following a GPS flightplan and not remaining at the set altitude, but the ILS capture and directional control issues above persist.

UPDATE!! I solved my problem. I had a function on my Logitech X-56 throttle assigned to 'Set Heading Bug'. It was the silver wheel on top of the throttle. I noticed that the wheel was not centered. Therefore when activating the gyropilot, the plane began a right hand bank, consistent with the direction the wheel on the throttle had been set. I deleted this assignment and all is now well. The plane responds to another increase/decrease heading bug assignment on my joystick and the ILS function works as intended. All things pointing to happiness.

that's weird. "Set HDG Bug" doesn't set the bug to a specific heading, it just "activates" it so you can use + and - to move the bug.

There are issues with the silver button in the DC-6 though which sends "Heading Hold" and centers the MSFS background heading bug to the current heading when the button is pressed. If that's done the mode changes and the approach doesn't work correctly anymore. Well, at least that's my observation.

Try as I might, I could not get the GyroPilot to capture the localizer at Phoenix rwy26 today. She just flew straight. The OBS showed everything as a normal ILS so I hand-flew the approach. I don't think this is a beta AAU1 issue, and more likely something with wider reach, but that's just some speculation so far. In any case, it will need some attention by the devs at PMDG.

I can capture VOR and GPS course just fine but the ILS and LOC only is impossible with the autopilot. It just ignores it. No problem, just fly it manually, but it‘s not how it should be 😅

With the latest update of the DC-6 and the official AAU1 update, navigation is totally broken when flying the DC-6 without GPS just using radio navigation. Basic navigation with the Gyro Pilot is working ok, but trying to follow a VOR using NAV1 radio and setting the Gyro Pilot to Localizer mode doesn't do anything. The plane is just continuing to fly straight.
It doesn't matter if the WT GNS mod that is available in the marketplace is installed or not.

Anyone else here flying the DC-6 without GPS and having the same problems?

It’s sounding like the GNS 430 is potentially messing with the analog radios; meaning that even if you don’t have the GNS 430 option enabled in the EFB, it’s still influencing the CDI.

What is suggested is to toggle on the GNS 430 option. Then toggle the CDI button on the GNS, making sure it is back on VLOC. Then switch back to the standard analog radios.

See if that gets traditional VOR NAV to work for you. I cannot test this myself as I’m on the Marketplace version of the DC-6 and have to wait for the update. I just know this same issue I’ve described is also affecting the 40th Anniversary Edition Beaver in a similar way.

Now there is another problem with the DME showing garbage, but that's a different story.
