PMDG Forum Rules

1) SIGN YOUR POSTS. Since 1997, we have asked users to sign their real name, first and last, to all posts in the PMDG forum. We do this in order to keep conversations personal and familiar. You took the time to be here, we want to get to know you. This is one of the few rigid rules that we enforce regularly. We do so because we feel that forums in which users must engage one another personally are generally warmer, more collegial and friendly. Posts that are unsigned will be quietly removed without comment by the moderators, so to make your life easy- we recommend enabling your forum signature so that you never need to remember. Do this by clicking the username pull-down at the top right, then selecting "User Settings." You will find the signature editor on the ACCOUNT tab, about half way down the page. Look for "Edit Post Signature." Be sure to click the "Show Signatures" box.

2) BE NICE. We are all simmers here and no matter our differences of opinion, we share a common love of aviation, computing and simulation. Treat everyone else in the forum with respect even when you disagree. If someone frustrates you, walk away from the conversation or ask for a moderator to get involved. Speaking of Moderators, they prefer not to be treated as "The Thought Police" but if any behavior infringes on the enjoyment of another user or is otherwise considered to be unacceptable in the moderator's judgment, it will be addressed in keeping with our view of ensuring that this forum remains a healthy environment for all simmers.

3) BE LAWFUL: Any behavior that infringes upon the law, such as discussion or solicitation of piracy, threats, intimidation or abuse will be handled unsympathetically by the moderators. Threats and intimidation may, at the moderator's discretion, be provided to law enforcement for handling.

4) BE FACTUAL: When you post, always be factual. Moderators will remove posts that are determined not to be factually accurate.

5) RESPECT COPYRIGHTS: Posting of copyrighted material such as flight manuals owned by Boeing or various airlines is not allowed in this forum. If you have questions related to copyrighted material, please contact a forum moderator for clarification.

6) RESPECT PMDG: We love to hear what you like about our products. We also like to hear what you think can be improved, or what isn't working. Please do tell us and we will always treat your feedback with value. Just be sure to treat the team respectfully, as they do put a significant amount of effort into building and maintaining these great simulation products for you.

7) RESPECT PMDG DEVELOPERS: All of the developers will spend some time here. Given the ratio of developers-to-users, it simply isn't possible for us to answer every post and private message individually. Please know that we do try to read everything, but developer workload is simply too high to manage personal contact with tens-of-thousands of users simultaneously. In most cases, members of the development team will stick to conversations in the forum and will not answer private messages.

8) RESPECT OTHER DEVELOPERS: PMDG has always advocated for a strong development community and we have many friends within this community. Every developer offers something unique that helps to make the simming community larger and more vibrant. We insist that you treat our friends respectfully.

9) RESPECT MODERATORS: Moderators have a tough job, and none of them enjoy having to stomp out negativity. If a moderator has to weigh in to keep a thread peaceful, please respect that effort and refrain from giving the moderator any grief.

10) If you require official support for any of our products please open a support ticket through the support portal, https://support.precisionmanuals.com

11) This forum is designed primarily as a vehicle for the PMDG development team to interact with our customers, and for customers to interact with one another in a manner that is positive, supportive and assists in the general advancement of understanding the simulation and helping to make this and future simulations better. Any other use of this forum is not permitted, including but not limited to discussion of pricing policies, business practices, forum moderating policies, advertising of non-PMDG products, promotion of events, services or products that are not approved in advance by PMDG or any other topic deemed unacceptable by any forum administrator

12) HAVE FUN: This is the whole point of it all.

    Questions for MSFS2020 Beta testers

After RSR's posts about Microsoft FS2020, I've become a lot more interested in buying it eventually. I'm going to wait for VR support since I can't imagine flying on a flat screen after enjoying the immersion of VR in P3D.

I do have a couple of questions for the beta testers about some aspects of MSFS2020:

    1) Scenery streaming: My understanding is that the scenery is downloaded on the fly. Does the sim gracefully handle dropped connections? If the connection is interrupted, then returns, is the sim able to pick up where it left off and update the scenery?

    2) Scenery caching: If I fly in an area regularly, can I have the sim cache that area locally to minimize bandwidth?

    3) AI/Live traffic models: Does the sim have reasonable AI models to accurately represent most commercial aircraft types? I don't need all the obscure types that are in limited service, but I want to go to my local hub airport and see a good variety of Boeings, Airbuses, Embraers, etc.

    4) AI/Live Traffic Liveries: Do we have real airline liveries for major operators, or are we getting the equivalent of the old FS2002 "Orbit", "Landmark", and "World Travel"

    5) Purchase options: If I purchase the Standard Edition first to see how it runs and later want to upgrade to get more planes and airports, is that possible to pay the difference? Right now paying double to get a few extra airports and planes doesn't make sense before I can see how it runs.

    6) Performance Tuning: One thing I've always wanted from a sim is some semi-intelligent live tuning of settings to maintain performance. I'd love to be able to set target settings and frame rate and allow the sim to reduce settings based on user priorities to maintain that rate (or some other measure of fluidity). For example, at low level, I'm willing to sacrifice cloud draw distance and shadow draw distance to get a good experience at a crowded international airport with live traffic. But in cruise at FL350, maximizing cloud and shadow draw distances adds realism and the sim could sacrifice terrain mesh size, terrain texture resolution or other things that aren't noticeable from high up.

Keep in mind that many participants in the Beta are still under NDA, and may not be able to answer your questions. There are quite a few videos available from people who have been given permission to show footage they have recorded from a media version of the new simulator, and some of those videos may answer some of your questions.

Regarding your second question though, the developers stated early on that you would be able to cache scenery to decrease the amount of bandwidth needed to stream it to your computer. I believe the size of this cache can be set by the user, but I'm not 100% certain of that.

Most people will wait before they jump in. I can't wait. No way MS will put out garbage. I was delighted with FSX, and this has to be better. I just need those PMDG planes in FS2020!!

Lol its not MS its Asobo first of all. I cannot stress enough when peiple say the publishers make the game.. like no Activision doesn't make call of duty, EA doesn't make Battlefield, MS doesnt make FS2020. Etc. Lol

This was answered in the "Pre-order FAQ" posted on the Flight Simulator website.

Q: Will I be able to upgrade editions?

A: Yes it is possible, but the most cost-efficient way to purchase Microsoft Flight Simulator is to buy the edition you are interested in.

True. But the title of Call of Duty isn't "Activision Call of Duty" or "EA Battlefield" The title of the new flight sim is indeed "Microsoft Flight Simulator" so I can see why there would be the direct association with Microsoft. Also consider this, The publisher does have a lot of say in the product that is produced, so Paul's statement is not un-true. Well the part about Microsoft anyway. The quality of the sim still remains to be seen, but the endorsement given by RSR is quite encouraging

Pretty sure if they include the real airlines, they would have to pay the airlines to be able to do that.

Can't recall exactly where now but I saw an in-game clip recently with aircraft in the background that looked an awful lot like they had DHL livery, but no logos. Have to wait and see I suppose. Since some of the existing traffic add-ons for P3D do use actual logos and liveries I'm assuming it's not out of the question that MSFS might use them. Generic ones would be a letdown for sure.

                    1. NDA
                    2. I belive cached scenery is being cleared on exit. But I'm juging only by seeing the remaining space on my disk so this is not 100% accurate.
                    3. NDA... Watch some demos
                    4. NDA... Personaly I doubt that it would be possible. Since most of the aircraft liveries have trademarks on them.
                    5. Buy yourself a gamepass. Costs 1€ and you can test msfs for 30days.
                    6. NDA and don't know. I belive this sort of optimization are done automatically in most of the games.

Question# 4 was easily possible in fsx (even fs9 more then a decade ago!) with ultimate traffic, and I doubt they had to pay every single airline. So what would have changed in the new sim to make this impossible?

I don't know enough about Ultimate Traffic to be able to answer that question, but none of the simulators had real world airline traffic by default.
