PMDG Forum Rules

1) SIGN YOUR POSTS. Since 1997, we have asked users to sign their real name, first and last, to all posts in the PMDG forum. We do this in order to keep conversations personal and familiar. You took the time to be here, we want to get to know you. This is one of the few rigid rules that we enforce regularly. We do so because we feel that forums in which users must engage one another personally are generally warmer, more collegial and friendly. Posts that are unsigned will be quietly removed without comment by the moderators, so to make your life easy- we recommend enabling your forum signature so that you never need to remember. Do this by clicking the username pull-down at the top right, then selecting "User Settings." You will find the signature editor on the ACCOUNT tab, about half way down the page. Look for "Edit Post Signature." Be sure to click the "Show Signatures" box.

2) BE NICE. We are all simmers here and no matter our differences of opinion, we share a common love of aviation, computing and simulation. Treat everyone else in the forum with respect even when you disagree. If someone frustrates you, walk away from the conversation or ask for a moderator to get involved. Speaking of Moderators, they prefer not to be treated as "The Thought Police" but if any behavior infringes on the enjoyment of another user or is otherwise considered to be unacceptable in the moderator's judgment, it will be addressed in keeping with our view of ensuring that this forum remains a healthy environment for all simmers.

3) BE LAWFUL: Any behavior that infringes upon the law, such as discussion or solicitation of piracy, threats, intimidation or abuse will be handled unsympathetically by the moderators. Threats and intimidation may, at the moderator's discretion, be provided to law enforcement for handling.

4) BE FACTUAL: When you post, always be factual. Moderators will remove posts that are determined not to be factually accurate.

5) RESPECT COPYRIGHTS: Posting of copyrighted material such as flight manuals owned by Boeing or various airlines is not allowed in this forum. If you have questions related to copyrighted material, please contact a forum moderator for clarification.

6) RESPECT PMDG: We love to hear what you like about our products. We also like to hear what you think can be improved, or what isn't working. Please do tell us and we will always treat your feedback with value. Just be sure to treat the team respectfully, as they do put a significant amount of effort into building and maintaining these great simulation products for you.

7) RESPECT PMDG DEVELOPERS: All of the developers will spend some time here. Given the ratio of developers-to-users, it simply isn't possible for us to answer every post and private message individually. Please know that we do try to read everything, but developer workload is simply too high to manage personal contact with tens-of-thousands of users simultaneously. In most cases, members of the development team will stick to conversations in the forum and will not answer private messages.

8) RESPECT OTHER DEVELOPERS: PMDG has always advocated for a strong development community and we have many friends within this community. Every developer offers something unique that helps to make the simming community larger and more vibrant. We insist that you treat our friends respectfully.

9) RESPECT MODERATORS: Moderators have a tough job, and none of them enjoy having to stomp out negativity. If a moderator has to weigh in to keep a thread peaceful, please respect that effort and refrain from giving the moderator any grief.

10) If you require official support for any of our products please open a support ticket through the support portal, https://support.precisionmanuals.com

11) This forum is designed primarily as a vehicle for the PMDG development team to interact with our customers, and for customers to interact with one another in a manner that is positive, supportive and assists in the general advancement of understanding the simulation and helping to make this and future simulations better. Any other use of this forum is not permitted, including but not limited to discussion of pricing policies, business practices, forum moderating policies, advertising of non-PMDG products, promotion of events, services or products that are not approved in advance by PMDG or any other topic deemed unacceptable by any forum administrator

12) HAVE FUN: This is the whole point of it all.

[03MAY20] Weekend Update: 747 Update Pending and a bunch of other run-on sentences...

    Captains,

I had originally planned to post this update on Saturday morning while sipping my coffee, but when I woke and saw that it was beautifully sunny, 75F/24C and not raining for the first time in nearly 11 weeks- I abandoned my "usual" Saturday morning routine in order to spend some time outdoors working on all those yard projects that come with home ownership... These are normally tasks that annoy me- but it has been so darned long since we saw any true sun around Northern Virginia- even pulling weeds under the watchful eye of the golden retriever was a welcome break from monotony- so please forgive me.

    PMDG 747 Updates:
The last few weeks, we have been extremely hard at work wrapping up an major update for the PMDG 747 Queen of the Skies II product line. This update covers a massive amount of ground in terms adding some very nice polish and fitness to an already high quality product line, with new wing and tail structural physics, new lift/drag models, updated performance for the GEnX engine type, update ground physics (huge overhaul that I am now pushing backward to NGXu) updated braking physics (we broke all braking across the 747/737 line a few months back... oops) and a ton of other bug fixes, corrections and improvements.

While all of this was going on, we also decided to fold in the required changes for P5D, which were significant. Updated models, updated VCs, updated textures, restructuring of the EFB and Nav display to be able to read the new scenery file layout, and the changes go on and on.

Some have had questions about many of the new features in P5D and whether we will capitalize on them right away. The short answer is: Not until we get all of the product lines compatible. THEN we will start to work in the changes.

This update for the 747 has taken some time- or, to put it differently- *we* have taken our time with it. We made substantial changes to the product in order to bring it up to the modern standard with which we are working in our code base- and these changes needed very thorough testing to be sure we don't leave any problems behind to upset an otherwise smooth simming experience. I think our beta team will agree that we have put no pressure on them at all and we have been cataloging their feedback, pushing fixes at them constantly, and asking them to be very thorough in their efforts to break this airplane. They have succeeded marvelously in that regard- while also giving us feedback on things that they thought could use improving (steering on the tug during pushback for instance) and we have invested a significant amount of time and energy into answering their inquiries.

The good news is that this code is readily portable back to NGXu- and stomping out the issues now will make it a MUCH easier port over to the 777 code base which desperately needs some of this new technology for refreshing the product line.

We have pushed a new beta to the test team for the weekend. They have reported back with one significant item that I need to investigate- but once we have that tacked down and re-tested we will be ready to push this update out. If all goes well- it should be with you in time for the weekend. <<DANGER: This expectation could go up in smoke if something major bubbles up- but obviously I'm pretty comfortable that won't happen at this juncture...>>

One note one how this update will roll out: This will be a full download/uninstall/reinstall. This is made necessary by a combination of broad-based changes in the product line, as well as the P5D compatibility changes that are pending. The good news is that it will get everyone on the same cycle.

    PMDG 737 NGXu Updates:
Once we have the 747 out of the way, we will begin pushing 737 updates to the testing team for them to suss out. The updates for the 737 are **mostly** already completed and waiting for the 747 to clear the testing circuit so that they can be validated. I don't think we should be looking at more than a few weeks of testing on the 737, and that update will also be a full re-download and will include functionality for P5D as well.

Work on the BBJ expansion continues apace and we hope to give you a preview of that in the not-too-distant future. The product is probably preview ready today, but we are so darned busy that nobody has the time to focus on that just yet. Work also continues on the cargo variants- and we'll have more information on that one for you in a few weeks, I hope.

    PMDG 777 Updates:
For a while, we had slid the 777 update ahead of the NGXu update, but this reversed itself when we got the P5D release schedule and realized it was sooner than we had originally expected. (Quite a bit sooner- but that was just a bad guess on our part.) I'll be honest and tell you that the 777 update timeline is creating quite a bit of anxiety around PMDG of late, because we are very heavily engaged across multiple platforms and multiple products- and if the 777 update proves to have the gestational problems that the 747 had with these updates- it could really become a drag for all of us waiting for this to get pushed out to you. The good news is that we killed a significant number of problems in moving the new technology into the 747 so that should smooth the path for the 777 a bit- but this is software and things never go smoothly in software...

    PMDG Global Flight Operations:
We have been quite hush-hush on this topic during the past few months, but we are preparing to begin expanding the testing realm for this product line. We have collected from this forum and from our interaction with simmers in other locations a list of folks that we think would make good, enthusiastic, critical wide-area testers and we anticipate reaching out to them in the near future in order to bring them into the testing process. The purpose of their testing is to drive users through the back-end customer management process and to get an initial batch of users that is larger than our regular testing team in order to proof-check load balancing and a bunch of boring back-end stuff. We are also interested to see what they think of the project structure and direction, since this is a growing platform that will evolve and grow over time...

Okay- I think I am forgetting something that I was planning to tell you- but for the life of me I cannot remember what it was. <ticks items off on his fingers, mumbles about an MD-11, laughs hysterically>>

Have a great weekend- and I hope you all continue to be safe and healthy... and don't forget to maintain a sense of humor, too. If you stop laughing- you aren't having any fun.

Thank you for the update Rob!

Looking forward to all of it.

If possible could you elaborate any further regarding the 747 “new lift/drag models, updated performance for the GEnX engine type” ?

Capt. Randazzo - great update! Looking forward to all of it whenever you can get it out the door. Enjoy the rare sunlight!

Yes indeed, you have forgotten to mention something, but me neither I can't remember what it could be. The release of a new airplane in a very near future? Hopefully not an airplane type which is retired already or going to be retired soon

Can't wait longer for the updates. I have installed P3DV5 already and I am waiting for you

                Gents,

Okay- for those who don't get sarcasm (because you KNOW there are a few...): I was poking fun at the folks who always think everything I say has to do with an update to the MD-11. No... we aren't doing anything with the MD-11, the MD-11 is dead.

This is indeed great news that the 747 is soon ready with numerous updates and improvements. Needless to say I can’t wait to explore the update. Hope the updates to the 737 and 777 lines will be quick to accomplish - but reading between the lines the 777 seems to be a bigger effort to update. However, that will be a very welcome update.

However, could you please elaborate if the the update/new version can be installed on both v4.5 and v5?

As eager I am to test performance in v5 the less inclined I would be to fly it in v5 until Active Sky is fully functional as well as other add-os etc.

                                    Nuno,

I presume the comment in your signature block is directed at me, since I sent you the reminder regarding signatures. We make very clear in the welcome email, and at opt-in during sign up that we require users to sign their posts here. I like your user name- and wish more people would (like you and I) use actual names for identities- but many choose not to. Thus- we settled on requiring users to sign their post with a signature line back in August of 1997.

Your cooperation is appreciated- and please understand that the message from me was not intended to ruffle your feathers- just to help ensure your posts don't go missing. I want to chime in as well ref the Cloud Master. Waiting on all my PMDG birds and Active Sky before I uninstall PV4.5.

From reading the announcement I take it all these updates are for P3Dv5 only? I ask because many users are happy with their 4.5 install.

Yeah you didn't mention the DC-6, are there any plans to get this plane up to V5?

Hope the updates to the 737 and 777 lines will be quick to accomplish - but reading between the lines the 777 seems to be a bigger effort to update. However, that will be a very welcome update.

However, could you please elaborate if the the update/new version can be installed on both v4.5 and v5?

As eager I am to test performance in v5 the less inclined I would be to fly it in v5 until Active Sky is fully functional as well as other add-os etc.

I’m also interested in the same answer about 4.5 because I’m not ready to move up to v5. It would be awful if 4.5 users had to miss out.
